Solid wood lights compared: why genuine handcraft makes the difference
Finding a light is easy these days. Furniture stores and online shops offer countless models, often at astonishingly low prices. But if you are looking for a light that gives your room character and stays with you for many years, you soon notice: not all lights are created equal. At SpeicherArt we make every solid wood light by hand in our workshop in Kiel. Here you can find out what sets handcrafted wooden lights apart from industrial mass production.
At a glance
- Genuine solid wood: oak, smoked oak, walnut, ash and beech instead of foil or veneer.
- Made by the founders: Knud and Fynn build every light themselves in Kiel.
- High-quality light: LEDs with a colour rendering index above CRI 95 and adjustable light colour.
- Personal contact: You speak directly to us, the founders, not to a chatbot.
The material: genuine solid wood instead of veneer and plastic
With industrially made lights, first impressions are often deceptive. Board material coated with a thin wood-effect foil or a veneer is frequently used. Such surfaces can hardly be repaired when damaged and lose their appeal over time.
For our solid wood lights we use nothing but real wood: oak, smoked oak, walnut, ash and beech. Solid wood has depth and a tangible structure, and it can easily be re-oiled or refreshed when needed. Our wood type comparison shows you which wood suits you.
Handcraft: every light a true one-off
In automated mass production, one product is identical to the next. With us, nature takes centre stage. When we select a piece of solid wood in our workshop, we deliberately let the grain, the growth and the fine lines of the tree flow into the light. That is why your pendant light or floor lamp exists exactly like this only once.
Every light is made by us founders, Knud and Fynn, ourselves, from cutting to the finished surface. You can see how elaborate that can be in the form gluing of our curved floor lamps, for example.
Sustainability and short distances
One often overlooked point when buying a lamp is its ecological footprint. Many mass-market lights travel long distances before they reach you. Chipboard and MDF also frequently contain synthetic resins as binders.
We source our wood regionally wherever possible and work it in our workshop in Kiel. For shipping, we deliberately avoid plastic packaging. The result is sustainable wooden lights designed for longevity rather than fast consumption. You can read more on our sustainability page.
Light quality: natural colours and adjustable light colour
Light has a strong influence on the mood and atmosphere of a room. With cheap lights, savings are often made on the light sources, which can lead to cold, unnatural-looking light.
Our lights are fitted with high-quality LEDs with a colour rendering index above CRI 95. This means the colours of your furniture, food and decoration look very natural, similar to daylight. Depending on the model, you can set the light colour from a cosy 2200 to a daylight white 6500 Kelvin, from warm evening light to clear working light.
Attention to detail: cable, suspension and ceiling rose
The quality of a light often shows where mass-produced goods cut corners. Instead of simple plastic cables and plastic ceiling covers, we rely on high-quality components: our pendant lights have fabric-covered cables that drape beautifully, stainless steel suspensions and a ceiling rose made of solid metal. This way the light looks as if cast from a single mould, from the ceiling down to the wood.
Controls and technology
Many simple wooden lamps offer nothing more than an on/off switch. Our lights combine traditional woodworking with modern LED technology:
- Dimmable: brightness flexibly adjustable, conveniently via remote control.
- Smart home optional: Many models are available with WiFi control via the Tuya app. Zigbee integration is possible on request.
- Height-adjustable: Our pendant lights can be adjusted in height even after installation.
Personal contact: directly with the founders
With large suppliers, your questions often end up in a ticket system or with a chatbot. Not with us: you write or speak directly to us, the founders, the very people who build your light. Whether advice on wood type and length, special requests or questions after your purchase, we answer you personally. Just write to us via our contact page.
Peace of mind when buying
Because we believe in our work, in addition to the statutory warranty you get a 5-year warranty on the built-in light source as well as a voluntary 101-day right of return. You will find the details on our 5-year warranty page.
