Two founders, one workshop: handcrafted solid wood lights

Hello! We are Knud and Fynn, an engineer and a master carpenter from northern Germany. We build every SpeicherArt light ourselves, by hand, from solid wood, in our workshop in Kiel. Because we believe Made in Germany should mean something again.

Moin, we're Knud & Fynn. And we build your light ourselves.

We founded SpeicherArt in 2020 and started out trying our hand at all kinds of solid wood work, from wine racks to beds. What stuck is what still fascinates us today: handcrafted solid wood lights that bring design and nature into harmony.

What makes it special: there is no anonymous production somewhere out there. Every single light is made in our own workshop in Kiel, planned, built and tested by the two of us. When you order from SpeicherArt, we make your light personally for you.

The founders

An engineer. A master carpenter. One standard.

We don't have fixed roles: we make every light together, and each of us brings all our knowledge and skill to every single piece. It's exactly this mix of engineering and craftsmanship that makes Speicherart what it is.

Knud

Knud is a qualified engineer. His technical understanding of construction, LED technology and well-thought-out details goes into every one of our lights. Wood runs in his family: his father was a boatbuilder.

Founder · Master carpenter

Fynn

Fynn is a master carpenter. His craftsmanship and his feel for solid wood and finishes go into every piece that leaves our workshop. Good craftsmanship shows in the details, and that's exactly where he's at home.

From granary to lighting workshop

Our story

1930s
The granary
The roots of our granary go back to the 1930s. Back then it was used to store grain, which was transported along rivers and canals. A real piece of northern German history.
Childhood
Raised around wood
The granary is part of our home and full of childhood memories. Knud's father was a boatbuilder, so working with wood has been part of his life since he was little.
2020
Speicherart is founded
We start out working with solid wood and try our hand at everything from wine racks to entire beds. The old granary becomes our place for ideas and craftsmanship.
2022
The first light
Our focus shifts entirely to what excites us most: solid wood lights. Bit by bit, our first designs grow into a collection of our own.
Today
Made in Germany, by hand
More than 5,000 customers later, we still build every light just as we did at the start: by hand, from solid wood, in our workshop in Kiel. And that's exactly how it should stay.

02Our origins

The origins of Speicherart

The old granary where we work today is far more to us than just a building. We associate it with countless childhood memories; it has always been part of our story and our home. Its roots go back to the 1930s, when it was used for storing grain and transporting it along rivers and canals.

Today we have breathed new life into it: the granary has become a place of inspiration where we develop our ideas and design handcrafted solid wood lamps. The name SpeicherArt and our logo reflect exactly this connection: between tradition, history and modern design.

03Craft & technology

How your light is made: handcrafted from choosing the wood to the final finish

Every SpeicherArt light starts with choosing the right wood: solid wood from sustainably managed forests, sourced locally wherever possible. We cut, glue, sand and oil. Every step is done by hand, until the grain and surface are just right.

We also install the technology ourselves: high-quality LED technology with brilliant colour rendering (CRI above 95), cleanly integrated and built to last. Finally, we personally check every light before it is sent to your home in plastic-free packaging.

The result is long-lasting, one-of-a-kind pieces, whether a wooden pendant light above your dining table or a solid wood floor lamp in your living room.

04Our mission

We want to bring Made in Germany back to life

Made in Germany once stood for a promise: quality, craftsmanship and things that last. Today, many lights are made wherever production is cheapest. We deliberately do the opposite.

Our lights are made in Kiel, in our own workshop: short distances, regional wood and two founders who stand behind every piece. For us, that also means being personally available. When you write to us, you won't get a chatbot but Knud or Fynn.

And because we believe in our quality, you get a 5-year warranty on the light source, free of charge.

The most sustainable light is the one you never have to replace. That's why we rely on materials that last, parts that can be swapped and packaging that is completely plastic-free.

We source our wood locally wherever possible. That keeps transport distances short and we know exactly what we're working with: solid wood, not veneer.

We choose wood, technology and fittings for durability, not for the lowest price. That way your light will accompany you for many years.

Everything replaceable
Every part of your light can be replaced individually. Repair instead of throwing away, reuse instead of buying new.

Your light travels well protected in paper and cardboard, both 100% recycled. No plastic goes into our boxes.
