Wooden lights: oak, walnut, ash, beech and smoked oak compared

5 min readby Knud Roeder

Leuchten aus Holz: Eiche, Nussbaum, Esche, Buche und Räuchereiche im Vergleich

A wooden light never works through its shape alone. The wood type determines colour, grain and the mood it brings to the room. Whether an understated wooden floor lamp or a striking wooden pendant light: here you will find the five wood types we work with in direct comparison, with their properties, their effect on the room and tips on care.

The five wood types at a glance

Wood type Colour Grain Effect in the room
Oak Light to medium brown Striking, open-pored Natural and timeless
Walnut Chocolate to deep brown Fine, partly wavy Refined and warm
Ash Light beige to slightly golden Lively, dynamic Light and modern
Beech Light to slightly reddish Very even Calm and understated
Smoked oak Deep brown to almost black Sculptural, clearly visible Striking and high-contrast

Why wooden lights are so popular

Wood feels warm, calming and valuable. Every grain is unique, which makes every light one of a kind. An oiled surface preserves the natural feel, and the wood forms a beautiful contrast to the light itself.

The wood types in detail

Oak: strong, timeless, versatile

Oak: lively pores and a striking grain

Colour and grain: light to medium brown, with distinct growth rings and an open-pored structure. Oak looks natural and calm and harmonises with many materials such as textiles, stone and metal.

Feel: Oiled oak feels warm and tactile. On an oak pendant light, the open-pored structure creates beautiful edges of light.

Effect and style: suits minimal, Japandi, Scandi and country house styles. In bright rooms oak sets friendly accents, and with black it creates a modern contrast.

  • Care: dust dry and refresh occasionally with wood oil.
  • Ideal for: long-lasting lights with natural character.

Walnut: refined, warm, full of character

American walnut: deep brown and an elegant figure

Colour and grain: American walnut shows chocolate to deep brown wood with subtle colour gradients and an elegant, partly wavy figure. It looks high-end straight away.

Feel: Oiled, a walnut floor lamp gains a warm depth. In the light, the wood develops a refined, almost glowing note.

Effect and style: ideal for elegant living and working spaces. Walnut goes well with brass and black and with fine textures such as wool, velvet or leather.

  • Care: treat occasionally with a clear, linseed oil-based wood care product.
  • Ideal for: lights with a luxurious effect.

Ash: light, modern, lively

Ash: light, friendly and with a dynamic figure

Colour and grain: very light beige to slightly golden, with a lively, sometimes dynamic figure. Ash looks fresh and brings visual lightness.

Feel: Oiled, the wood feels particularly pleasant. Ash lights almost seem to float.

Effect and style: perfect for Scandi, contemporary and New Nordic. Light walls, linen, natural stone and matt metals underline the modern effect.

  • Care: uncomplicated, refresh oiled surfaces once or twice a year.
  • Ideal for: airy lights with a friendly presence.

Beech: simple, robust, pleasantly warm

Beech wood with a light, even appearance and calm structure
Beech: calm, even look, combines with anything

Colour and grain: light to slightly reddish and very even. Beech recedes visually and lets the shape and light of the lamp take centre stage.

Feel: Oiled beech looks natural and pleasantly warm. As a beech light, it is ideal for calm, clean rooms.

Effect and style: fits almost anywhere, from Scandinavian to classic, and looks friendly, understated and timeless.

  • Care: easy to clean, refresh with a soft cloth and a little linseed oil when needed.
  • Ideal for: purist lights with a soft, even effect.

Smoked oak: dark, striking, high-contrast

Smoked oak: dark depth and expressive contrast

Colour and grain: Through ammonia fuming, oak turns deep brown to almost black. The grain remains visible and looks particularly sculptural.

Feel: Oiled smoked oak shows a refined depth. Smoked oak lights create strong light-dark contrasts above dining tables or kitchen islands.

Effect and style: perfect for modern, minimalist and industrial interiors. Smoked oak harmonises with concrete, natural stone, glass and black steel.

  • Care: dust dry, refresh oiled surfaces occasionally and do not sand.
  • Ideal for: striking lights with a strong presence.
