Pendant light above the dining table: how to find the right length and height
A pendant light above the dining table is the centrepiece of the dining area. For it to look good and work well, two things matter above all: the right length and the right height. In this guide we show you our rule of thumb, a table for all common table sizes and how an uplight adds pleasant ambient light to the room.
At a glance
- Rule of thumb for length: The pendant light should be 40 to 70 cm shorter than the dining table.
- Seats at the ends of the table? Then go for the shorter option so nobody bumps their head.
- Height: around 60 to 70 cm between the tabletop and the underside of the light.
- Uplight: Indirect light towards the ceiling gently brightens the whole room.
Why the length of the pendant light matters so much
The length determines whether your dining table light looks harmonious and whether it is practical in everyday life. If the light is too short, it gets lost above a large table and only illuminates the middle. If it is too long, or even longer than the table, it looks bulky, and the ends of the light extend into the area where people sit down and stand up.
Especially with linear pendant lights above the dining table, it is therefore worth taking a quick look at the dimensions before you decide.
The rule of thumb: 40 to 70 cm shorter than the table
Our recommendation is simple: The pendant light should be 40 to 70 cm shorter than your dining table. This leaves around 20 to 35 cm of space at each end of the table. The light looks balanced, the table is evenly lit, and there is enough room to sit down and stand up.
If people sit at the ends of the table
If the ends of your dining table are used regularly, it is best to go for the shorter end of the range, i.e. around 70 cm shorter than the table. Whoever sits at the head of the table then does not stand up directly beneath the end of the light. This reduces the risk of bumping your head when getting up.
If the ends of the table are usually free, you can lean towards the longer end of the range, i.e. around 40 cm shorter than the table.
Table: the right pendant light length by table size
| Length of dining table | Recommended light length | Suitable standard lengths |
|---|---|---|
| 120 cm | 50 to 80 cm | 80 cm |
| 140 cm | 70 to 100 cm | 80 or 100 cm |
| 160 cm | 90 to 120 cm | 100 or 120 cm |
| 180 cm | 110 to 140 cm | 120 or 140 cm* |
| 200 cm | 130 to 160 cm | 140*, 150 or 160 cm* |
| 220 cm | 150 to 180 cm | 150, 160* or 180 cm |
| 240 cm | 170 to 200 cm | 180 or 195 cm |
| 260 cm | 190 to 220 cm | 195 cm |
* 140 and 160 cm are available for our curved models Fiona and Mila. Any other length can be chosen individually in our lighting configurator.
Example: Your dining table is 200 cm long and the ends are often used. Then a pendant light of around 130 to 140 cm is a good fit. If people only sit along the long sides, a light of 150 or 160 cm also works.
The right height above the dining table
Alongside the length, the hanging height is decisive. We recommend a distance of around 60 to 70 cm between the tabletop and the underside of the pendant light. This lights the table well, the light does not dazzle, and you can still see each other across the table. In open-plan living areas or with very high ceilings, the light can also hang a little higher, up to around 80 cm.
Our pendant lights are height-adjustable, even after installation. So you can easily try out the perfect height.
Uplight: indirect light as a passive light source
A pendant light above the dining table primarily shines downwards onto the table. That is ideal for eating, but often leaves the rest of the room dark. This is where an uplight helps: an additional, indirect light shines from the top of the light onto the ceiling.
The ceiling itself becomes a passive light source. It reflects the light softly and evenly into the room without glare. The dining area feels more open and brighter, and the contrast between the brightly lit table and the dark surroundings is pleasantly softened. Especially in the evening, this creates cosy ambient lighting.
- Switched separately: On our pendant lights with uplight, the main light and the uplight can be switched and dimmed separately.
- Flexible use: Uplight only for a calm mood, main light only for dining, or both together for maximum brightness.
- A light ceiling helps: The lighter the ceiling, the better the indirect light spreads through the room.
More tips for perfect dining table lighting
- Centre it: The light should hang centred above the table, not centred in the room. If the ceiling outlet is in the wrong place, the cable can be led into the ceiling rose from the side.
- Plan for dimming: With a dimmable pendant light you can adapt the light to any situation, from a bright family dinner to a cosy evening.
- Also for the kitchen island: The rule of thumb for length applies equally to kitchen islands and counters.
Conclusion: how to find the right pendant light for your dining table
Choose a pendant light that is 40 to 70 cm shorter than your dining table, and go for the shorter option if people sit at the ends of the table. Hang it around 60 to 70 cm above the tabletop, and add an uplight if you like for warm, indirect ambient light. That way your dining area will look harmonious, be well lit and feel cosy.
